by Staff writer

In a rather bizarre ceremony, residents of the mountainous city of Chongqing in southwest China gathered at a water park to take a hot chili bath.

Called the hot chili bath challenge, participants are required to sit in a bucket filled with hot chili peppers and water.

Residents of the city are well known for their love of spicy cuisine and chili has always been the most important part of their daily diet.

Contestants were offered four kinds of hot chili of varying degrees of pungency. Those who could stay in the bath more than five minutes won a bottle of red wine.

The organizer of the contest said the purpose of holding the contest was to improve the overall experience of customers in the water park.
