8 of the world’s strangest discoveries

by Staff writer

The world remains a mystery to many of us.

From vampires to UFOs, ancient scripture and mass grave sites, these unexplained discoveries have stumped scientists and captured imaginations:

1. Bosnian Sphere

A massive spherical rock was discovered in the town of Zavidovici in Bosnia.

It is believed to be the largest man-made sphere in the world, meaning the giant object might be proof that humans had advanced technology thousands of years ago.

But some scientists have disagreed, saying the rocky disc could have naturally formed.

2. The Grauballe Man

In 1952, a body was discovered in a bog in Denmark which was so unusually well-preserved that its hair was still intact.

The man dated back to the late third century and resembled an alien from another planet.

3. Volgograd Discs

In the Volgograd region of Russia, a dozen disc-shaped stones containing a military grade metal called tungsten were discovered by a UFO group during excavations.

The group believes they came from aliens but other scientific bodies think they developed from erosion.

4. Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines in southern Peru are a group of pre-Columbian geoglyphs etched into desert sands.

Covering an area of nearly 1,000 sq. kilometers, there are about 300 different figures, including animals and plants.

Composed of over 10,000 lines, some of which measure 30 meters wide and stretch more than 9 kilometers, the figures are most visible from the air or nearby hilltops.

These mysterious white lines are believed to have been drawn as far back as 500BC.

Thousands of years later, the Nazca lines can still be made out, but no one knows what they mean.

5. Venetian Vampires

In 2006, the skeletal remains of a woman from the 16th century with a brick stuffed in her jaw were discovered in Venice.

Historians first thought the remains belonged to an accused vampire, but now believe the woman could have been deemed a witch.

6. Mount Owen Claw

Nearly three decades ago, a team of archaeologists were carrying out an expedition inside a large cave system on Mount Owen in New Zealand when they stumbled across a frightening and unusual object.

With little visibility in the dark cave, they wondered whether their eyes were deceiving them, as they could not fathom what lay before them—an enormous, dinosaur-like claw still intact with flesh and scaly skin.

The claw was so well-preserved that it appeared to have come from something that had only died very recently.

The archaeological team eagerly retrieved the claw and took it for analysis.

The results were astounding; the mysterious claw was found to be the 3,300-year-old mummified remains of an upland moa, a large prehistoric bird that had disappeared from existence centuries earlier.

7. Ashkelon’s Dead Babies

The remains of nearly 100 babies were discovered in an ancient bathhouse in Ashkelon, Israel.

Babies were not considered valuable back in ancient Roman times and it’s widely considered the infants could have belonged to prostitutes.

8. Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil’s Triangle, is a loosely-defined region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean, where a number of aircraft and ships are said to have disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

Scientists have claimed hexagonal clouds creating terrifying air bombs with winds of 170mph could be behind the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle.

The stormy blasts can flip ships into the sea and bring planes crashing down into the sea.
