Flash Story: At First Glance

A doctor hurried into the hospital after being called up for an emergency surgery.

He quickly changed his clothes and went straight to the surgery block.

Outside the door of the unit, he found the boy’s father pacing up and down while waiting for him.

On seeing him, the man yelled: “Why did it take you all this time to come? Do you not know that my son’s life is in danger? Do you not have any sense of responsibility in you?”

“I am so sorry,” the doctor apologized, “I wasn’t in the hospital and I came as fast as I could after receiving the call.”

“I won’t forgive you if anything happens to my son!” the boy’s father warned.

“Your son will be fine,” the doctor assured him. “Now please step aside so that I can go in and do my job.”

“I know you might never understand,” the man said. He gave the doctor an ugly scowl and stepped out of the way.

The doctor nodded and entered the ward.

The appendectomy took three straight hours. At the end of it, the doctor opened the door and came out.

With a little smile on his face, he announced to the father, “Thank goodness, your son is saved!”

The man flew into the ward to see his son.

Seeing that his son is alive and well, he turned to the doctor to thank him.

The doctor put up his hand. “If you have any question, ask the nurse,” he said and walked out.

“Why is he so arrogant?” the man asked the nurse beside him. “He couldn’t even wait to hear what I had to say.”

“His son died yesterday in a road accident,” the nurse told him. “He was in the burial when we called him for your son’s surgery. And now that he has saved your son’s life, he left running to finish his son’s burial.”
